April 24th the Swiss celebrate Labor Day. It is the biggest holiday of the year in Zurich with over half
a million people turning out to watch the Labor day Parade. This culminates in the lighting of a huge
bonfire with an effigy of a snowman on top. To make it more interesting, the Snow Man's head is
filled with explosives. Once the bonfire is lit they time how long it takes for the snowman to explode
(I am not making this up). The shorter amount of time, the sooner winter ends and the better the
summer weather. Yes, it is basically the Swiss equivalent of groundhog day, Punxsutawney Frosty.
On average it takes 18 minutes for the snowman to bite the dust, this year he decapitated in 10
minutes. Hello Sunshine! Enjoy the photos.
